HoursThe DOT Library is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday except federal holidays. Special arrangements can be made for DOT employees to use the library outside these hours. Contact staff for details. CollectionsThe DOT Library is one of the largest transportation libraries in the United States. The library holds more than 200,000 titles, including over 1000 periodical titles. The library collects materials related to all areas of transportation, both in print and electronic formats. The technical collection is the primary source for materials concerning general transportation, surface, and water transportation. Special topics include: bridges, driver studies, engineering (emphasis on civil), highways and highway safety, history of transportation, land utilization, marine engineering, mass transit, merchant marine, navigation (except air), oceanography, pipelines, railroads, ships and shipbuilding, statistics, traffic engineering, traffic surveys and forecasts, urban transportation, and waterways. The Library's collection contain general legal materials in addition to those specifically related to transportation law. Bibliographic records for the library's collection of print materials can be accessed through the online catalog. There are also separate lists of periodicals (currently being updated) and electronic databases held by the library. PoliciesWho may use the libraryThe library is open to DOT employees, contractors, and members of the public. Non-DOT library visitors will be asked to show a valid picture ID to enter the library and are encouraged to call ahead. BorrowingOther than DOT-FAA employees, all DOT employees may borrow circulating library materials. DOT-FAA employees wishing to borrow materials should contact the FAA Library at 202-267-3113 to arrange for possible inter-library loans (ILLs). Non-DOT customers can contact their local library to arrange for possible ILL. PhotocopyingPhotocopy services are available. |
