Michael Currens, Ph.D.

Michael J. Currens Dr. Michael Currens has worked for the National Cancer Institute since receiving his B.S. from the University of Maryland in 1977. His initial appointment was in the former Chemical Carcinogenesis Program headed by Dr. William Lijinsky under the former Litton Bionetics contract at NCI-Frederick, and concurrently attended Hood College where he received the M.S. (Biomedical Sciences, 1984). Michael entered Federal Service in the laboratory of Dr Samuel Broder, NCI in 1986 and was engaged in early laboratory studies involved with discovery of anti-HIV agents. Later, he accepted an appointment to the NCI-Frederick laboratory of Dr. Michael Boyd (Pharmacology Development Research Group-DTP) which pioneered early NCI in vitro drug screening efforts. Dr. Currens received the Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the George Washington University in 1996 with his doctoral research comprising work done with natural product derived anti-HIV therapeutic candidates. Subsequently, he managed the core anti-HIV screening labs for the Laboratory of Drug Discovery Research and Development/ NCI. Dr. Currens accepted the position of deputy Branch Chief, Screening Technologies Branch/DTP in 2000. Scientific interests included innovative drug screening methodology for molecular targets, and broad based anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-cancer drug screening with both synthetic and natural product derived libraries. Dr. Currens developed an interest in technology transfer matters through his service on the NCI TTB-Technology Review Group (2004-2006) and in January 2007 accepted a position as Technology Transfer Specialist in TTB/NCI.
