Of the more than 6 million American women who will become pregnant this year, an estimated quarter to half will likely visit a dentist. Although dental care is generally considered safe during pregnancy, little clinical trial data exist on the subject. In the June issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association, a team of scientists compare the safety outcomes from a large NIDCR supported clinical trial in which pregnant women received scaling, root planning, and other dental treatments.
