Eckford was one of the Little Rock Nine that attempted to enroll in Little Rock's Central High School, which until then had been segregated. U.S. Representatives Vic Snyder (AR-02), Marion Berry (AR-01), and Mike Ross (AR-04) held a press conference at Pulaski Heights Elementary School in Little Rock on May 18, 2001 to highlight the need for increased federal funding for public schools. Snyder said that the federal government needs to keep its funding promise to local school districts for providing I.D.E.A. programs that benefit children with disabilities.
