Congressman Jesse L. Jackson, Jr. announced that federal grants totaling $5,050,000 was awarded to educational institutions, community based organizations, and villages in the South Side and south suburbs.
Education grants totalled $2,388,000; health care grants totalled $1,164,000; community investment fund grants totalled $1,315,000; and school safety and firefighter grants totalled $183,000.
Grants from the United States Department of Health and Human Services were awarded to:
*La Rabida Children’s Hospital, Diabetes Prevention, $142,000
*Roseland Christian Health Ministries, Community Economic Development, $140,000
*Christ Ecumenical Center, Compassion Capital Mini Grants, $50,000
*Roseland Christian Health Ministries, Ryan White Early Intervention, $314,000
*Governors State University, Substance Abuse Prevention, $102,000
*Chicago State University, Nurse Education/Retention, $266,000
*Aunt Martha’s Youth Center, Basic Center Program, $150,000
Grants from the Department of Justice and the Federal Emergency Management Agency were awarded to:
*Village of Hazel Crest, School Safety Grant, $37,000
*Glenwood Fire Department, Firefighter Grant, $63,000
*Park Forest Fire Department, Firefighter Grant, $83,000
Grants from the Department of Education were awarded to:
*Chicago State University, Community Technology Centers, $408,000
*Chicago Public Schools, Smaller Learning Communities, $1,500,000
*Academic Development Institute, Parent Resource Centers, $480,000
Grants from the Department of Treasury were awarded to:
*National Community Investment Fund, Community Development Financial Institutions Program, $1,315,000
