Paul Goble depicts bison, elk, antelope, moose, butterflies, turkeys, turtles, swallows, hawks, two American Indians and other living things grouped around a tree in the cover illustration for his book (1996) Remaking the earth: a creation story from the Great Plains of North America, which re-tells a traditional Indian creation myth. His recent gift to the Library includes this and five additional original drawing that illustrate (2000) Storm Maker's Tipi, another of his books. An Englishman, Goble entered the world of American Indians when he first visited the Great Plains in 1959, becoming a trusted friend and student of their cultures over many years. He brings their stories to life in the dazzling images of his award-winning books. In this tableau of the natural world, he reinforces a theme that he derives from his knowledge of American Indians and weaves through his images and texts--the idea of connection between all living things. |
