The
National Museum of American History
houses some of the Smithsonian’s best-known treasures including:
- the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired
the words for the National Anthem;
- entertainment icons such as Judy Garland’s ruby
slippers from "The Wizard of Oz";
- the wooden lap desk used by Thomas Jefferson
as he wrote the Declaration of Independence;
- a baseball autographed by Babe Ruth, judged
by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time;
- the Woolworth lunch counter that was the site of the
1960 student sit-in in Greensboro, N.C.;
- the hat worn by President Lincoln on the
night he was assassinated; and
- extensive collections from jazz greats Duke Ellington
and Ella Fitzgerald.
Each year millions of schoolchildren visit our museum and benefit
from our curriculum materials. Our traveling exhibits, affiliate
partnerships and educational courses bring the museum to communities
across the U.S.
The National Museum of American
History is America at its best. We depend on private support
to keep it that way.
