Photo 1: Main House, Chicora Wood Plantation.

[Graphic] Photo 1 with link to higher quality photo.
(E. Kirby-Smith)

The rice plantation houses that survive today in Georgetown County are tangible reminders of the wealth and success of rice planters in the area. These houses are typically 1½ to 2 stories high, covered in clapboard (wooden siding material), rest on brick pier foundations, and have a one-story porch across the facade. They generally are situated on high ground, facing a river.

Questions for Photo 1

1) Based on the above description, does Chicora Wood's plantation house appear to be typical? Why or why not?

2) In what ways does the house appear to have been designed with coastal South Carolina's semi-tropical climate in mind?

* The image on the screen has a resolution of 72 dots per inch (dpi), and therefore will print poorly. You can obtain a high quality version of Photo 1, but be aware that the entire file will take about 45 seconds to load with a 28.8K modem.
