“Enhancing Professional Education, Research Infrastructure, and Capacity
Building in Minority Serving Institutions.” |

The AMHPS is an umbrella organization whose membership includes twelve
historically black medical, nursing and allied health sciences, dental, pharmacy and veterinary schools (12
schools). Together, these institutions are regarded
as the nation’s primary educators of minority health professionals and
leading authorities on minority health. The AMHPS serves to engage the
collective resources, scholarship and technology of its member
institutions to facilitate and promote optimum health among poor and
minority people. |

This cooperative agreement addresses the performance of executive
agency actions under Executive Order 13256, to advance the development of
human potential, to strengthen the capacity of Historically Black Colleges
and Universities (HBCUs), to provide quality education, and to increase
opportunities to participate in and benefit from Federal programs. The
agreement also addresses the "Healthy People 2010" focus areas
of Educational and Community-Based Programs and Public Health
Infrastructure, as well as CDC's goals to achieve healthy communities,
institutions and schools. |

The purpose of the program announcement is to: |
|
Assist
organizations which provide support for the advancement of professional
development, education, and research and training for racial and ethnic
minorities. |
|
|
|
Specifically, the program is intended to assist these
organizations
to: |
|
|
Build and strengthen institutional infrastructure
supporting the development and implementation of effective programs
to advance professional development, education, and research
training for racial and ethnic minorities. |
|
|
Improve program and institutional capacity to foster community leadership
development, promote community mobilization strategies and community resource
development, and encourage partnerships and coalition building. |
|
|
Enhance quantitative and qualitative research
efforts of the participating institutions. |
|
|
Strengthen the educational and professional
development of minority health professionals and educators. |
|
|
Support student training initiatives in order to
introduce public health to racial and ethnic minority students. |
|
|

Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI)
“Enhancing Professional Education, Research Infrastructure, and Capacity
Building in Minority Serving Institutions.” |

OMHD funds the Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) to implement the “Research
Initiative for Student Enhancement (RISE)” project. RISE provides research
training experiences for racial and ethnic minority graduate, medical and
post-baccalaureate students. |
|
This program addresses the performance of
executive agency actions under Executive Order 13256, to advance the development
of human potential, to strengthen the capacity of Historically Black Colleges
and Universities (HBCUs),
to provide quality education, and to increase opportunities to participate in
and benefit from Federal programs. |
|
The program also addresses the “Healthy

Health Sciences Institute (MC/PHSI)
"Increasing the Knowledge and Skills of Underrepresented
Minority Students in the Areas of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and
Occupational Safety and Health." |
|
This program addresses the “Healthy People 2010”
focus areas: Access to Quality Health Services, Educational and
Community-Based Programs, and Public Health Infrastructure. The
program also addresses the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970,
which assures safe and healthful working conditions for working men and
women and provides research, information, education and training in the
field of occupational safety and health. |

In
addition, the program addresses the performance of executive agency
actions under Executive Order 13256, to advance the development of human
potential, to strengthen the capacity of Historically Black Colleges and
Universities (HBCUs), to provide quality education, and to increase
opportunities to participate in and benefit from Federal programs.
The program also addresses CDC's goals to achieve healthy schools,
workplaces, and global health. |

|
The purpose of the program is to: |
|
Increase the knowledge, skills,
and research training of disadvantaged minority students including
racial and ethnic minorities who are under-represented in the areas of
biostatistics and epidemiology, and occupational safety and health. |
|
|
|
Specifically, the program is intended to assist
Minority Institutions of Higher Education (MIHE) to:
|
|
|
Develop an undergraduate research training and internship program for African
American and other under-represented minority students. |
|
|
Increase the knowledge and skills of African American and other underrepresented
undergraduate minority students in specific categories of specialization (i.e.
epidemiology, biostatistics and occupational safety and health). |
|
|
Expand the educational and applied public health research
training and skills development opportunities and experiences in the
specific fields of specialization (epidemiology, biostatistics and
occupational safety and health) for disadvantaged minority
students who are interested in pursuing public health careers. |
|
|
Develop and implement a public health science curriculum at an
MIHE. |
|
|
Foster linkages and collaboration among students and faculty in
developing epidemiological and analytical knowledge base for the
health status of minority and disadvantaged minority students in America. |
|
|
Increase the number of disadvantaged minority students with advanced degrees in
epidemiology, biostatistics, and occupational safety and health. |
|
|

My Brother’s Keeper, Inc. (MBK)
“Strengthening Existing National Organizations Serving
Racial and Ethnic Populations Capacity Development Programs: Strategies to
Advance Program Implementation, Coordination, Management, and Evaluation
Efforts.” |

OMHD funds My Brothers Keeper, Inc. (MBK) to implement
the “Community-based Approaches to Capacity Building Assistance (CBA2) Project". |
|
CBA2 utilizes innovative strategies to strengthen organizational capacity in the
health disparities areas of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. CBA2 also
provides programmatic and organizational support in the form of training and technical
assistance to strengthen community based organizations. |
|
This program addresses
the “Healthy People 2010” focus areas of Educational and Community-Based Programs
and Health Communication targeting a variety of public health issues affecting
racial and ethnic minority populations, as well as CDC's goals to achieve
healthy communities. |
|
|
|
The purpose of the program is to: |
|
Support and strengthen existing National and Regional Minority Organizations (NMOs/RMOs)
that engage in health advocacy, promotion, education and preventive health care
with the intent of improving the health and well-being of racial and ethnic
minority populations. |
|
|
|
Specifically, the program is intended to assist NMOs and/or RMOs in: |
|
|
Expanding and enhancing culturally and linguistically appropriate health
educational and community-based programs targeting racial and ethnic minorities,
thereby contributing to the goal of eliminating health disparities within the
racial and ethnic population. |
|
|
Promoting and advancing policy analysis efforts, program assessment and program
development activities, formative evaluation, training and technical assistance
programs, and project management. |
|
|
Strengthening coalition building and collaboration and leadership that improve
the health status and access to programs for racial and ethnic minority
populations. |
|
|
Providing innovative capacity-building assistance to support and strengthen
minority community-based organizations in management, fiscal management, and
program operations. |
|
|
