2021 Holmes Conference set for June 1-3 in Clearwater Beach
The 2020 National Holmes Mining Safety and Health Conference has been cancelled.
This action was necessary for the health of our attendees and to comply with the latest guidance related to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
Join us in 2021 at the same location (Clearwater Beach, Florida) on June 1-3.

2020 Scholarship applications being accepted
We are now accepting applications for the 2020 Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association scholarships until May 1, 2020.
We encourage all qualified students in fields related to mining health and safety to apply.
New officers, awardees announced at 2019 Conference
The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association thanks everyone who contributed to their successful 2019 Joint National Meeting and Training Seminar held on June 18-20, 2019 in Virginia Beach, VA.
William Gerringer from North Carolina became the Holmes Safety Association President and Jeff Kravitz was named as the Holmes Mine Rescue Association President. Both Presidents will have terms that last until the end of next year’s conference.
The following honors were given out at the June 20 awards banquet:
- William “Bill” Hoover Lifetime Achievement Award – Judy Tate
- Ival Van Horne Award – Woody Wickersheim
- Holmes Safety Association Woman of the Year – Carla Gustafson
- Holmes Safety Association Man of the Year – Robert Weston
- Holmes Mine Rescue Association Man of the Year – Bill York-Feirn
- Holmes Mine Rescue Association Woman of the Year – Linda Chasko
- District Council Awards
- Surface coal (Group III) – Somerset District Council
- Underground coal (Group III) – Anthracite District Council
- Surface metal/nonmetal (Group III) – Anthracite District Council
- Underground coal (Group I) – Scotty Groves District Council
The 2020 conference is planned for Clearwater, FL and the 2021 conference is planned for a location in Texas to be identified in the near future. Watch this website for updates.
2019 Scholarships Awarded
Three Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association scholarships were awarded for the 2019 academic year at the Association’s annual conference in Virginia Beach. The recipients and other applicants will be notified.
2020 scholarship application details will be announced in the near future.
