York County Snack Foods and Plant Tours
With the slogan "Watch It Made in York," the York
County 250th Anniversary Commission, arranged for tours, on August
26, 1999, of 28 manufacturing plants in York County, Pennsylvania.
Among York's more well-known companies are Harley-Davidson, the
famous motorcycle manufacturer, Susquehanna Pfaltzgraff Company,
America's oldest manufacturer of casual dinnerware, Snyder's of
Hanover, maker of pretzels, chips and tortillas, and Utz Quality
Foods, Inc. which makes over 12,000 pounds of potato chips an hour.
Other York candy and snack food manufacturers produce York
Peppermint Patties, Katherine Beecher Candies, Wolfgang Candies,
and Classic Caramel Imperial Apples. The tour also highlighted the
Industrial Museum of York County, which houses a collection of
machinery and products made in York County, from pottery to
military hardware.
Fun "York Facts" include the following:
More than one fourth of York County's workers are employed in
manufacturing -- almost 55,000 people.
Harley-Davidson Motor Company is one of the state's 20 largest
manufacturing employers.
York International machinery air conditions the chunnel between
England and France, and the Kremlin in Russia.
York County once had 16 automobile manufacturers.
America's first ironclad steamboat was made in York in 1825 by
John Elgar, and was launched in the Susquehanna
River.
York manufacturer A.B. Farquahr was the first international
exporter of agricultural instruments.
America's first diesel tractor was made by R.H. Sheppard of
Hanover.

newsletter, and a videotape entitled: "Heart of Pennsylvania: Plant
Tours."
