U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige today announced that William Leidinger has been sworn in as assistant secretary for management for the U.S. Department of Education.

As assistant secretary for management, Leidinger will be responsible for the overall direction and administration of the department??s management functions. In this capacity, Leidinger will advise senior department officials on administrative matters, conduct evaluations and assessments of department programs and management functions, and recommend ways to improve the management and performance of this agency.

Before joining the Education Department, Leidinger worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP as the Mid-Atlantic business development manager since 1997. From 1992 to 1996, he served as county executive for Fairfax County, Va. From 1986 to 1991, Leidinger was executive vice president of Security Federal Savings in Richmond, Va. He served as the city manager of Richmond, Va., from 1972 to 1978 and subsequently held elective office as a member of Richmond City Council from 1980 to 1990.

Leidinger, a long-term Virginia resident originally from Illinois, earned a bachelor's degree from Loras College in 1962 and a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1964. He and his wife, Karen live in Oakton. They have two sons, Michael and Steven, and three granddaughters.
