Purpose
To study seamount ages and basalt chemistry in order to better
understand the long term history of the South Pacific thermal anomaly.
Information to be Derived
Sample descriptions, detailed chemical and mineralogical analyses of
bulk Fe-Mn crusts and individual crust layers, and major oxide compositions and
mineralogy for substrate rocks.
Summary
13 NW Pacific seamounts and guyots were dredged during the Tunes 6
cruise. A total of 35 dredges were attempted and 23 recovered Fe-Mn crust
samples and substrate rock. One or two dredge hauls recovedred samples from most
guyots, however, Vlinder and Batiza Guyots yielded five and four dredge haul
recoveries, respectively. Minor additional bathymetric surveys were conducted
during Tunes 6.
