National Situation Update: Saturday, October 13, 2007

Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED).

National Weather Summary

West: The storm system that resulted in over an inch of rain in central California yesterday will produce showers and snow in the higher elevations of the Rockies.

Midwest: As low pressure develops east of the Rockies, a band of rain will develop over Wyoming and Montana and spread as far east as Indiana and as far south as the Texas Panhandle. Severe thunderstorms are possible over the central Plains this evening.

South: A large high pressure area will keep the drought-stricken region dry through the weekend except for showers across the southeast coast of Florida.

Northeast: The circulation around the backside of a Canadian low pressure system will produce scattered showers across Upstate New York and Northern New England. A band of lake-effect rain will develop across Lake Ontario. Some accumulation of wet snow is possible across New York's Tug Hill Plateau. High temperatures will range from the upper 40s in Northern New England to the 70s in southeast Virginia.(National Weather Service, Media reports)

Tropical Weather Outlook

Atlantic - Caribbean Sea - Gulf of Mexico
Tropical Depression Fifteen has dissipated.

A nearly stationary and large area of disturbed weather over portions of Central America, the northwestern Caribbean Sea, Cuba and Jamaica is associated with a broad area of low pressure.  This system's proximity to land will likely inhibit tropical cyclone formation during the next couple of days. However, heavy rains will likely continue over this area for the next few days, primarily over portions of the Pacific Coast of Central America.

Elsewhere, tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 48 hours.

Eastern and Central Pacific:
A broad area of low pressure accompanied by disorganized showers and thunderstorms is centered several hundred miles south-southwest of Manzanillo Mexico.  Upper-level winds are marginally favorable for some slow development during the next couple of days as this system drifts westward.

Elsewhere, tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 48 hours.

Western Pacific:
Tropical Storm 18W (Lingling) is located approximately 720 miles west of Midway Island and is moving to the north-northwest.  The system is expected to become extra tropical within 48 hours and poses no threat to Midway Island.
