Do you have a fabulous collection that Americans would clamor to view? Are you developing an exhibition on a topic that might appeal to a broad, national audience? Has your current exhibition exceeded your wildest dreams and now you’d like for it to tour the country? Has a potential sponsor indicated an interest in supporting your exhibition plans if only you increase the audience?

The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) is looking for exciting exhibitions to add to our renowned program. For more than 50 years, SITES has connected Americans to their shared cultural heritage through more than 1,500 exhibitions and related programs. We’ve presented art, science, history, and cultures in museums as well as science centers, historical societies, libraries, botanic gardens, schools, and shopping malls.

While most of our exhibitions reflect the collections and research of the Smithsonian Institution, SITES also collaborates with museums, collectors, and scholars. We welcome inquiries and encourage proposals for shared projects.

Exhibition Proposal and Evaluation Process:

Proposal Submission: Before submitting a formal proposal, please review the exhibition proposal guidelines. [Downlaod free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view PDF file.]

Please submit a formal exhibition proposal, with all requested materials, to the Exhibition Proposal Coordinator, Stephanie McCoy-Johnson.

Due to the high volume of proposals we receive, it is not our policy to return them, so please do not send original scripts, artwork, or photos. SITES does not accept responsibility for any loss or damages to the content of your proposal package.

Investigative Phase: A SITES staff member will be assigned to follow up for additional information. This phase may last several months while SITES investigates the feasibility of the project, which often includes curatorial review, market surveys, budget projections, and timing.

Address questions and further inquires to Stephanie McCoy-Johnson, 202.633.3105.
