Speaker Biography: Ashley Bryan, born in New York City, made his first book in kindergarten when a teacher had the class create their own books of letters of the alphabet. He went to art school at Cooper Union and studied philosophy at Columbia University. A former teacher at Dartmouth College, Bryan has compiled, written and illustrated numerous books, many of them African folktales. Several of his books have received Coretta Scott King Awards including "Lion and the Ostrich Chicks," a 1987 Honor book and "Ashley Bryan's ABC of African American Poetry," a 1998 Honor Book. He lives and works on a small island off the Maine coast.
