Student Allergies and Classroom Treats
More and more children are being diagnosed each year with food allergies, therefore parents bringing snacks into school to share with the class could present a life threatening event for a child with such allergies. Teachers are aware of which children in their classrooms have known food allergies, but cannot know what ingredients are contained in items brought from home or purchased and brought to school without the ingredients listed. Thus, not all children could share in a celebration with their classmates.
Walker school staff would recommend that if you would like to share in celebrating an event such as a birthday with your child’s class, you think of other alternatives to food when possible. This will teach the children to celebrate without focusing on food and help them develop habits that will lead to a healthier and physically fit adult life. If you choose to bring a food item, it must be commercially prepackaged and/or in the original box, that lists the ingredients. Information to share with your children: all snacks will be eaten in front of the teacher, no snacks may be taken home or eaten while walking home or on the bus, students should not trade food with others.
