States report data to the U.S. Department of Education using the EDEN Submission System (ESS), an electronic system that facilitates the efficient and timely transmission of data from SEAs to the Department. Data are transmitted by the states to meet the data requirements of annual and final grant reporting, specific program mandates, and the Government Performance and Results Act.

The EDEN Survey Tool (EST) is a secure, Web-based interface through which local school districts enter data, then electronically submit the data to the Department using the Internet. Submitted data is available through EDFacts for analysis and reporting purposes. The EST is intended to obtain data that supplement, not duplicate, the EDEN data collection from states. Currently, the EST is used to collect data for the Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC) and the Indian Education Formula Grant Program Application for Funds (Formula Grant EASIE).

EDFacts data analysis and reporting tools permit users to access, analyze and report on education data for over 100 data groups. Two kinds of reporting options are available - standard, preformatted reports and ad hoc, or individually tailored, reports. States currently have access to standard reports for data they provide to the Department. Department staff have access to standard and ad hoc reports to develop reports for senior leadership, secretarial initiatives and program offices.

Users of EDFacts have access to data that states supply through the EDEN Submission System as well as other data from the following data collections:

The EDFacts Data Collection: States submit K through 12 education data on approximately 100 data groups at the state, district and school levels to the U.S. Department of Education. Critical directory data is submitted, as well as data on schools, services, staffing, students, and educational outcomes.

The Consolidated State Performance Reports: The Consolidated State Performance Reports (CSPR) include data that tracks progress in implementing the No Child Left Behind Act. Data supplied by states for the CSPR report include data on adequate yearly progress, state performance assessments, highly qualified teachers, and school choice options. Disaggregated demographic data is available for all students, limited English proficient students, students with disabilities, and students in high- and low-poverty schools.

The Common Core of Data: The Common Core of Data (CCD) includes fiscal and non-fiscal data about all public schools, public school districts and state education agencies in the United States. The data include information that describes schools and school districts, including name, address, and phone number; descriptive information about students and staff, including demographics; and fiscal data, including revenues and current expenditures.

Special Education Data Collection: Data from states approved to send special education data to the EDEN Submission System, include information on special education child counts (demographic and disablement categories data), exiting, and education environment data.
