New Number of Annual HIV Infections
The Journal of the American Medical Association released the first data from a new and innovative CDC-developed system designed to estimate the number of new HIV infections (or incidence) for the United States in a given year.
CDC considers the release of these estimates to be a sentinel event in the course of the epidemic because this is the first national surveillance system of its kind in the world based on direct measurement of new HIV infections and it provides the clearest picture yet of the US HIV epidemic. We—as individuals, families, communities, and as a nation—must mobilize against HIV and AIDS. With our collective commitment to HIV prevention, it is possible to end this epidemic during our lifetimes.
