Healthy Marriage Initiative

The Healthy Marriage Initiative (HMI) helps couples who have chosen marriage for themselves gain greater Healthy Marriage Initiative (HMI)access to marriage education services, on a voluntary basis, where they can acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to form and sustain a healthy marriage. Research demonstrates the strong correlation between family structure and a family’s social and economic well-being. Congress recognized the fact that two-parent, married families represent the ideal environment for raising children and incorporated marriage, as well as family formation and fatherhood, as key components in welfare reform legislation in 1996.

The HMI also includes targeted strategies, such as the African American Healthy Marriage Initiative, the Hispanic Healthy Marriage Initiative and the Native American Healthy Marriage Initiative, to address the unique cultural, linguistic, demographic and socio-economic needs of children and families in Hispanic, Native American and African American communities.

Funding opportunities under the HMI are made in conjunction with other ACF programs. Those eligible to apply for funding include, but are not limited to, faith-based and community organizations, State or local governments, independent school districts, Native American Tribal organizations, non-profits having 501(c)(3) status with the Internal Revenue Service and for-profit organizations.
