| | How is avian influenza in humans treated? Category: Avian Influenza
Answer:Supportive care is important, as it is for annual influenza. Laboratory studies suggest that two prescription medicines approved for human influenza viruses, Tamiflu™ and Relenza™, may work in treating avian influenza infection in humans. Clinical trials involving people with H5N1 are needed to see how effective they will actually be. In addition, influenza viruses can sometimes become resistant to these drugs, so these medications may not always work. Some adverse reactions to Tamiflu have been reported in children.
