Child support cases do not automatically close when a child turns 18 or emancipates. Federal law allows the child support agency to close a child support case under certain conditions.

Starting July 1, 2004, Minnesota will charge monthly fees for child support services. In 2003, the Legislature passed a law to recover some of the costs of operating its child support program. The law requires the child support agency to charge individuals a cost recovery fee for providing full child support services.

In Minnesota, more than 70 percent of all support payments are made through income withholding. Self-employed parents pay through automatic recurring withdrawal or by mailing payments to the state. To get information about payments on your case, you need a personal identification number (PIN).
