NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY
Saturday, September 27, 2008 9am

We welcome Waco area residents to join the US Army Corps of Engineers, Keep Waco Beautiful, and the City of Waco in the largest annual coast-to-coast, single-day volunteer restoration effort for America’s public lands.  Local volunteers will roll up their sleeves and devote their day to habitat enhancement work at Waco Lake Parks and the Waco Wetlands as part of the annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on Saturday, September 27th.  The event will last from 9am-noon, and 1pm-4pm, so you’ll need to bring your own lunch if you plan to stay all day.  Snacks will be provided.

Directions to Twin Bridges:
3201 North Highway 6 on the West Shore of the lake.  From I-35 take Hwy 6 north for about 6 miles, take Speegleville Park exit, continue to park entrance.

Directions to Wetlands:

To get to the Wetlands entrance from I-35, follow Highway 6 west towards Meridian, then turn right on the corner of Hwy 185 (North Bend Crossing).  Eichelberger Crossing Rd. is the first turn on your left, before reaching the North Bosque River.

PROJECTS:

Twin Bridges Park (meet at pavilion):
Re-paint picnic shelter posts after floods damage (paint available).
Paint sign posts.
Paint BBQ cookers with heat-tolerant black pt.
Pick up trash, pile driftwood below pavilion and Hwy 6 bridge.

Speegleville Park:
Weed xeriscape garden in front of gate house.

Midway Park: 
Paint BBQ cookers with heat-tolerant black pt.
Trim trees (loppers/chainsaw).

Wetlands:
Planting, aquatic plant removal, & painting projects

Other:
Weed/mulch native plant beds in front of office, gatehouses

This year volunteers will be rewarded with a free entry day during the next year at any public land site managed by those agencies: Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and USDA Forest Service.
