Earthquakes
General introduction, with nice photos. By Kaye M. Shedlock
and Louis C Pakiser.
Earthquake
Terminology
Glossary of terms related to earthquakes.
The
Richter Scale
The size of an earthquake is measured by several methods based
on different kinds of measurements. In 1935, Charles Richter
introduced a method based on the amplitude of seismic waves.
The
Modified Mercalli Scale
While the Richter Scale describes the size of the earthquake,
the Modified Mercalli Scale describes the intensity of shaking
and degree of damage at locations affected by it.
Other
Earthquake Magnitude Scales
Including the Local Magnitude Scale and Moment Magnitude Scale.
The
San Andreas Fault
General introduction to the fault, its geologic setting
and the earthquakes on it, with nice photos. By Sandra S.
Schulz and Robert E. Wallace.
Earthquake
Probability Study for San Francisco Bay Region
A regional model that attempts to unify plate motions,
geology and historic earthquake activity toward the aim of
estimating long-term probabilities for large earthquakes in
the region.
Listening to Earthquakes
Educational and entertaining exploration of the parallel between
earthquake waves and audible sound. "Listen" to actual earthquake
seismograms speeded up to audible frequencies. Uses .wav format,
which you can download.

Fair

to help you do you own.
