Debate Team

Recent Accomplishments (2008)
The USMA Debate Team had an excellent season in 2007-2008. The team finished the season ranked in the Top 10 in the nation in both the Cross-Examination Debate Association(CEDA) and National Debate Tournament(NDT) final team rankings. This finish is consistent with the team’s recent performances and this year the team topped powerhouses such as Northwestern, Cornell, Dartmouth, Cal-Berkeley, and of course, Navy. USMA also finished second in the CEDA Northeast Regional Sweepstakes Award.

Three different teams won tournament championships this past season. Cadets Derrick Jerke and Joseph Langella won the CEDA East Regional Championship in the JV Division. At the 2007 Liberty University Debate Tournament, Cadets Anthony Rowles and Brian Chung won in the JV Division. Additionally, Cadets McKinsey Hulen and Tianyi Xin won the 2008 Brad Smith Invitational at the University of Rochester in the Novice Division. Last and certainly not least, USMA’s top Varsity team, Cadet Mitchell Suliman and Anthony Rowles were alternates for the prestigious National Debate Tournament, which consists of the top 74 teams in the nation.

The USMA Debate team earned over 30 individual awards, including three Academic All-Americans (Cadets Mitchel Suliman, Steven Warner, and Anthony Rowles). The team also hosted its 40th annual debate tournament in October, drawing nearly 100 entries from around the nation. The tournament was the largest debate tournament of the year in the CEDA East Region and the largest debate tournament in the nation offering three divisions of competition (Novice, Junior Varsity and Varsity).

Army Debate, sponsored by the Department of Social Sciences, is proud of its long tradition of excellence.
