Grand Island - An 83-year-old Grand Island woman who was picking mulberries in her yard was struck and killed by a pickup that had run off a nearby road. Police said Marceline Forst was killed Wednesday. The 23-year-old driver was arrested.

Lincoln - University of Nebraska administrators plan to eliminate 56 jobs at the flagship campus in Lincoln to deal with a budget shortfall that is also expected to lead to cuts at other locations within the four-campus system. The system faces an $8.5 million shortfall. An academic affairs committee must approve the plan.

Wednesday, June 17
Lincoln - Audits of two state-run psychiatric hospitals show overpayments to employees, lax bill-collection efforts and more spending than authorized by the Legislature. All told, the audits report 25 finance-related problems at the Norfolk and Lincoln regional centers.

Lincoln - Helen Boosalis, the first woman elected mayor of Lincoln, died Monday at a hospice. She was 89. The Democrat served as mayor from 1975 to 1983. She also became the first female president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. In 1986, Boosalis was defeated by Republican Kay Orr in the nation's first woman-vs.-woman gubernatorial election.

Omaha - Nebraska officials have taken custody of an 18-month-old after the child's mother allegedly tried to sell the boy online at Craigslist. Sarpy County Attorney Lee Polikov said charges have not yet been filed, but state officials put the child in foster care for his safety. The text of the ad said the woman is a meth addict and the boy deserves better.
