Security Fighting to Protect Social Security Social Security is the single largest source of retirement income in the United States. Congresswoman Solis is an original cosponsor of the Consumer Price Index for Elderly Consumers Act, which would help establish an adjusted Consumer Price Index for seniors to ensure they receive a fair Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). Congresswoman Solis strongly supports enhancing and protecting Social Security for future generations of working Americans. Opposing Risky Privatization Plans Congresswoman Solis strongly supports protecting Social Security from risky privatization schemes which would jeopardize American workers from obtaining a secure retirement. She opposes all efforts to privatize Social Security. Click on the Social Security Card to calculate the effect privatization would have on your own Social Security benefits. Congresswoman Solis recognizes that Social Security faces challenges 40 to 50 years in the future. However, private accounts make Social Security's challenge worse, force massive benefit cuts, and increase the national debt. Congresswoman Solis opposes privatizing Social Security because deep benefit cuts could occur for all beneficiaries, even those who want to stay in traditional Social Security and not have a private account. These benefits are critical for disabled workers, widows, and children, and must remain viable for younger workers in the future. Ensuring Equitable Distribution of Social Security Congresswoman Solis believes that everyone is entitled to receive their fair and deserved Social Security benefits. That is why she is a cosponsor of the Social Security Fairness Act of 2003. This bill repeals the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), which unfairly reduces the Social Security benefits of public sector employees who have previously worked in the private sector.
