DeLauro Helps Showcase Platt Tech’s New Manufacturing Training Equipment
Milford, CT – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) attended a celebration to showcase Platt Technical High School’s new manufacturing training equipment at the High School in Milford. Joining DeLauro in marking the occasion were Platt Tech High Principal Gene LaPorta, Superintendant of Vocational Schools, Dr. Abigail Hughes, the New Haven Manufacturers Association, other elected officials and members of the manufacturing industry.
“We are not only celebrating Platt Tech’s newest state-of-the-art equipment, but also the vision to apply it, meeting the needs of Connecticut Manufacturers and building a brighter future,” said DeLauro. “I am delighted to have played a part -- helping to secure more than $200,000 in federal funding for new machinery that meets the highest standards and puts Platt Tech students on the path to success. This is about giving our next generation a chance to compete.”
DeLauro has been a strong supporter of Platt Technical High School, including its effort to meet the needs of local area manufacturers who need skilled workers. That is why in the Omnibus Appropriations bill for 2008, she secured $238,755 to help the High School replace its equipment base in its Manufacturing Technologies Department to allow them to meet both the educational needs of students and the skill requirements of manufacturers.
Continued DeLauro, “Platt stands out as one of the few high schools to have this kind of technology and training – few high schools give their students the skills to reach industry certification – few high schools give their students this kind of precious foot in the door. And when students enter the manufacturing field, they enter a competitive industry that offers a competitive salary. Manufacturing in Connecticut has made significant strides, it has learned to be flexible to meet the needs of the future and it has become very specialized.
“With the economy in trouble and the marketplace still more competitive, it pays to have skills that employers value. And it all starts right here. It is about creating a pipeline that feeds local business, grows the local economy and creates opportunity for the local workforce. Harnessing the innovative potential in your students and plugging it into the economy where they will make a difference and build a foundation for the 21st century.”
