Two provisions authored by Solis - one to develop specialized courts to expedite domestic violence cases and one to provide grants for media campaigns to educate minority and immigrant communities about domestic violence – was included in the bill. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S RIGHTS Congresswoman Solis believes an attack on a woman anywhere is an attack on women everywhere. In May 2007, the House passed H.RES. 100 – Condemning Murders of Women and Girls in Guatemala, a resolution introduced by Solis which expresses concern about the unsolved murders of more than 2,000 women in Guatemala since 2001 and encourages new efforts to address these crimes and prevent further killings. In May 2006, the House and Senate passed legislation (H. Con. Res. 90) authored by Solis to address the disappearances and murders of more than 400 women in the U.S.-Mexico border city of Ciudad Juárez. WORKING TO PREVENT TEENAGE PREGNANCIES Thirty-four percent of young women become pregnant at least once before they reach the age of 20. For Latinas, the rate is 51%. Congresswoman Solis has introduced legislation (H.R. 468) to help provide families, schools and communities with tools to prevent teen pregnancy in vulnerable communities. DEFENDING WOMEN’S REPRODUCIVE FREEDOM Congresswoman Solis is a staunch defender of abortion rights, and she firmly believes that every woman should have access to effective, low-cost family planning. She is also a strong supporter of programs that require insurance companies to cover prescription contraceptive methods and continually fights to ensure that women's reproductive rights are secure. PROTECTING TITLE IX Congresswoman Solis has played an instrumental role in the fight to save Title IX from the Administration's attempts to dismantle women's equity in sports. She co-sponsored a hearing on the importance Title IX in lives of thousands of girls and women. SUPPORTING A MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE More than 13 million women in the U.S. are single mothers who aren’t earning enough to provide for their children. Congresswoman Solis is fighting to give these women a pay raise through a minimum wage increase. Almost 60% of minimum wage earners are women. |
