These proof and uncirculated gold coins are being struck as a part of the First Spouse Gold Coin series. The gold coins issued to accompany any President who served without a spouse will each feature a design emblematic of Liberty on its obverse, as depicted on a United States coin issued during the President's time in office. The obverse, designed by United States Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht, is a reproduction of the Liberty Seated Dime obverse coin design minted in the early 1800s. The reverse, designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz, depicts Martin Van Buren as a young man at the family-operated tavern in the village of Kinderhook, New York.
This limited-edition cover—only 50,000 will be produced—is the eighth in the American Presidency $1 Coin Cover Series. The coin cover features two Martin Van Buren $1 Coins, one each from the United States Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver, from the first day of production from that facility—September 2, 2008 (Philadelphia), and September 3, 2008 (Denver).
