Great LakesProtecting the Great Lakes has been a top priority during my entire tenure in Congress. I authored legislation reauthorizing the National Invasive Species Act during my first term in the House, and also was responsible for the Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration Act. Both measures became law. I served as co-chair of the bipartisan Great Lakes Task Force for more than a decade, and took the lead on a host of environmental issues, including stopping the scourge of invasive species infecting our lake, preventing drilling in the Great Lakes and halting the possible sale of Great Lakes’ water. I have also worked for 13 years to complete the cleanup of the Ashtabula Harbor, and have successfully secured tens of millions of dollars in federal funding for the project. In the 110th Congress, I have authored ballast water management legislation to prevent the introduction of invasive species into our lakes through ships. I also support legislation that will prevent recreational boaters from having to obtain costly EPA permits. Recreational boating is a huge economic asset in NE Ohio. There are more than 4 million recreational boats registered in the eight Great Lakes states, and recreational boaters generate almost $16 billion in spending each year and support more than 100,000 jobs.
