BONO MACK HELPS HONOR THE LIFE AND MEMORY OF PRESIDENT FORD
Joins local, community leaders in dedicating Rancho Mirage Post Office in honor of Gerald R. Ford

Rancho Mirage, CA, Oct 28, 2008 - Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today was joined by local and community leaders and the Ford family in honoring the life and legacy of President Gerald R. Ford. Under Bono Mack's legislation, which became law in August of 2008, the Rancho Mirage Post Office, near the Ford residence, was named the Gerald R. Ford Post Office. At this morning's dedication ceremony, Bono Mack and the community paid tribute to President Ford's lifetime of achievements and service.

"President Ford was a true American hero," said Bono Mack. "He was one of our nation's most respected leaders, and we are proud to have called him one of our own. The countless contributions of President Ford and his wife Betty have made a lasting impact on our community, and it is clear that we have all been touched in some way by the Ford family. Whether by supporting his wife's Betty Ford Center or by tirelessly seeking the preservation of some of our region's most scenic landscapes, President Ford constantly gave back to our community and to those around him.

"I am proud to have introduced this legislation commemorating the life and many achievements of President Ford. Naming President Ford's local post office in his honor is one small way that we as a community can pay tribute to all he has done for us and our nation. I am honored to have known this great man as an esteemed leader, member of our community, valued advisor and friend. He will always be loved and remembered by us all."

President Gerald R. Ford served in Congress for twenty-five years, including eight years as the Minority Leader. A veteran, President Ford served honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In 1974, he became the 38th President of the United States, serving from 1974 -1977 and leading our country during a tumultuous time in its history, when Americans were faced with distrust in the government, economic uncertainty and the Vietnam War.

In his remarks at the dedication ceremony, City of Rancho Mirage Mayor Pro Tem Gordon Moller added, "President Ford has warmed the collective hearts of all the citizens of Rancho Mirage."
