A Weekly e-Newsletter from
Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA)

April 8, 2005

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the first issue of my weekly e-newsletter and thank you for subscribing. In today’s high-tech world, staying in touch with the citizens of Georgia means using the Internet as well as old-fashioned communication tools such as letters, phone calls and faxes. I look forward to staying connected with you through this newsletter, and I welcome your feedback.

I have recently moved into new offices in Georgia and Washington, D.C., and I encourage you to contact my office via email, phone, fax, or mail with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have. You can contact me online by filling out my web contact form available at http://isakson.senate.gov/contact.cfm.

My Georgia office is now located at One Overton Park, 3625 Cumberland Boulevard, Suite 970, Atlanta, GA 30339.  The phone number is (770) 661-0999 and the fax number is (770) 661-0768.

My Washington office is located at 120 Russell Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20510. The phone number is (202) 224-3643 and the fax number is (202) 228-0724.

This week, the Senate debated but did not complete consideration of the State Department Reauthorization bill for Fiscal Years 2006 and 2007, due to Pope John Paul II’s funeral.

Also this week, there was mixed news for Georgia from the Environmental Protection Agency. I was very pleased that the EPA has added the Georgia counties of Muscogee and Clarke to the list of those that now meet the agency’s new air quality standards. However, I am very disappointed that the EPA failed to add the counties of Walker and Catoosa to that same list.  I have worked closely with Walker and Catoosa counties and asked Secretary designate Johnson to reconsider the EPA’s action.  It is my hope that these counties will reapply for consideration.  These two counties have been unfairly lumped in with nearby Chattanooga for purposes of testing even though their contribution to the regional pollution is negligible. I will continue to work with county officials, members of the Georgia delegation, and the EPA to get these counties on the list of those that meet federal air quality standards and meet the same success of Clarke and Muscogee counties.

I was pleased to receive the F/A-22 Raptor report this week from Undersecretary of Defense for acquisition, Michael Wynne.  He described the Raptor as an “exceptionally well-performing airplane” and said it has jumped a significant hurdle on its way to being cleared for full production.

I was also one of five members of Congress to attend the Medal of Honor ceremony for Army Sgt. 1st Class Paul Ray Smith, whose heroic actions saved over 100 servicemen’s lives.

The Senate had an abbreviated work week as people around the world mourned the passing of Pope John Paul II and headed to Rome to attend the funeral of this great world leader.

What’s on Tap for Next Week?

Next week, the Senate is expected to vote on the President’s request for supplemental appropriations for our efforts in Iraq.

Sincerely,
Johnny Isakson
