Congresswoman Richardson Votes to End Access for Mexican Trucks

WASHINGTON Today, the House passed HR 6630, legislation that would end a year-old poorly advised program allowing Mexican trucks beyond a 25-mile border zone.

Congresswoman Richardson, who voted in favor of the bill said, "the safety of the American people is my first responsibility as a member of Congress, therefore safety standards for Mexican truckers, including drug testing and criminal checks of drivers, must be on par with the standards established here in the United States."

“Representing the 37th Congressional District which transports over 45% of the entire nation’s cargo,   accelerates the need for programs that increase American jobs and strengthen our failing economy that must be the 110th Congress’ primary responsibility.”

The program, which allows for up to 500 trucks from Mexican companies access to U.S. Highways, is opposed by trucking, consumer, and environmental groups.  Further, it is believed that the program contributes to the loss of jobs in the American workforce and that Mexican trucks have far less safety regulations.  In the Long Beach area alone, this bill will suspend access by Mexican trucks to State Routes 47,I-110, I-405, and I-710 Freeways.

HR 6630 passed the House with overwhelming bi-partisan support 395-18.   The bill now goes to the Senate.
