Towson, Md. - Today, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, in conjunction with the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities and the National Park Service awarded the B&O Railroad Museum with a Save America’s Treasures grant to restore four historically significant 19th century B&O locomotives that were severely damaged by the collapse of the museum’s roundhouse in 2003.
“The B&O Railroad Museum is a Maryland treasure,” said Congressman John Sarbanes. “The funding they’ve received will ensure that generations to come can learn about the birthplace of American railroading right here in Baltimore.” The in-house conservation efforts at the B&O museum will address the immediate threat to the locomotives and serve as a model that will benefit future preservation and conservation efforts. This year 40 organizations will receive Save America’s Treasures grants. Each organization selected conserves significant U.S. cultural and historic treasures. # # # |
