Kent Bowman Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarship

The University of North Texas is pleased to announce the creation of The Kent Bowman Scholarship, a fund in honor of Dr. Kent Bowman which provides scholarships for qualifying students at UNT.

Dr. Kent Bowman was a well loved and respected historian, teacher, and counselor to generations of students. His love of knowledge about cultures and history impressed and inspired Turkish Institute for Police Studies participants at UNT and in Turkey. This scholarship honors him by providing financial assistance to students who share the interest that Dr. Bowman had in Turkish language, culture, history, society, and politics.

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant for the Scholarship must meet the following requirements:

  1. Students must meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the university in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Students much maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless the student has fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program;
  3. Graduate students or undergraduate students majoring in any degree program at the University may apply, with preference given to graduate students;
  4. To retain the scholarship, the recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale;
  5. Preference will be given to students of Turkish or Central Asian descent and/or to students with a serious academic interest in these geographic areas.
  6. Recipients must agree to go to Turkey, Central Asia, or the Caucas region following graduation and be employed in jobs aimed at improving higher education, democracy, and global security. The mandatory employment period is calculated at one year of employment for every one year of scholarship received from this source, unless written waiver is given by the scholarship donor.
  7. Preference will be given to students who can speak/read/write the Turkish language.

Description of Award

It is the intention of the donor that minimum awards of $1,000 per academic year be given to students selected by the Scholarship Committee. Once a student is awarded the Kent Bowman Scholarship, the student shall receive the award as long as the student continues to meet the minimum continuing criteria and funding is available.
