It's a Girl's World

Fem Flicks Film Series
Media Library Chilton Hall Room 111C

Examines the relationships among young girls. Through audio and video diaries, a disturbing picture emerges of how girls use friendships to hurt each other and win social power in the group. At the same time, their parents struggle through considerable denial and disbelief to accept and deal with the serious consequences of this behavior. Discusses a true story of a fourteen-year-old girl who committed suicide. Shatters the myth that social bullying among girls is an acceptable part of growing up. (2004, 68 min.)

OPAL Event: Audio Description Workshop - Helping Blind and Low-Vision Users Enjoy Digital Images

OPAL Online

Audio Description is a narrative technique that makes visual images more accessible to blind and low-vision people by producing audible written descriptions of non-verbal visual information, such as digital photographs, television programs, motion pictures, and live events. This workshop will focus on uses of audio description by libraries with digital image collections, image-intensive websites, etc.

Please Note: This workshop will last approximately 2.5 hours. It will be a "working workshop" in the sense that we will be writing and recording actual audio descriptions. Please provide a digital image for which you would like to create an audio description during this workshop.

The Beauty Backlash

Fem Flicks Film Series
Media Library Chilton Hall Room 111C

With its "Real Beauty" information and marketing campaign, the Dove brand struck a chord with women skeptical of unhealthy or absurd standards of attractiveness. But did the campaign have the widespread impact Dove intended? And what are the implications for the global cosmetics and fashion industries? This program investigates consumer reactions against the idealized images of beauty promoted by TV, movies, and glossy magazines, while exploring the complex relationship between corporate strategy and feminine self-esteem. High-level insights concerning Dove, L'Oreal, and advertising giant Saatchi & Saatchi provide a fascinating departure point for a socioeconomic discourse. (2007, 30 min.)
