World AIDS Day features development director

What: World AIDS Day will be observed with an AIDS awareness presentation called "The Power of Partnership" at the University of North Texas

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas Volunteer Center and the UNT Division of Equity and Diversity will celebrate World AIDS Day with a presentation by guest speaker Brian Schmedinghoff, development director for AIDS Services of North Texas. The event, titled "The Power of Partnerships," will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 1 (Monday) in UNT's One O'Clock Lounge, located in the University Union, which is which is one block west of Welch and West Prairie streets.

World AIDS Day is an annual event held on Dec. 1 when individuals and organizations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic. This year marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day celebrations, first held in 1988.

Schmedinghoff's discussion, designed for college students, will include topics related to HIV/AIDS such as statistics on infection rates in North Texas counties, how to engage in safe sex practices and where HIV testing is conducted in the region.
AIDS Services of North Texas is a nonprofit organization that works to provide support for HIV positive persons and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in Denton, Collin, Hunt, Rockwall and Kaufman counties. For more information about AIDS Services of North Texas, visit Aids Services of North Texas.

Schmedinghoff initially joined AIDS Services of North Texas as a volunteer and officially began to work for the organization's development department in July 2003. Since then, he has been awarded by the agency with the 2005 Distinguished Service Award and the 2006 Director's Choice award.
