Spotlight: University of North Texas Baroque Ensemble

The University of North Texas Baroque Ensemble consists of 15-20 members who specialize in motets and madrigals and other early literature for small groups. They perform on such instruments as the theorbo, a lute-like instrument; dulcian, an early bassoon; sackbut, an early trombone; Spanish cross-strung harp; viola da gamba; cornetto; recorder; harpsichord; baroque violin; and baroque cello. Participation is determined by audition and includes UNT faculty, graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in several degree programs in the College of Music. The Baroque Ensemble has been invited to perform at the biennial international "Missiones de Chiquitos" festival in Bolivia, making it the only student-based group from the United States to perform at the festival since it began in 1996. The festival takes place in historic Jesuit missions in Bolivia. The Baroque Ensemble also will perform at the Instituto Peruano Norteamericano in Cusco, Peru which honors the musical heritage of several churches founded in the 17th century by the Jesuits.
