Welcome to the Department of Sociology at the University of North Texas (UNT) from its faculty, staff, and students!

buildingWe are a diverse community of individuals who share a desire to understand our complex world and to improve the quality of life for all of us who inhabit it. Our fourteen faculty, almost 500 undergraduate students, and approximately 100 graduate students are involved in educational and research activities that span the world, from Africa and the Middle East to Europe, Russia, and Asia, from Latin America to Denton, Texas.

Students in our programs study a wide variety of sociological topics, including social stratification, race and ethnicity, gender, health and illness, urbanization, demography, disasters, suicide, the family, religion, sexuality, aging, work and organizations, and political economy. Our graduates work in academia, business, non-profit management, social services, government service, health care, religious ministry, and many other fields.

Our faculty are currently conducting research on the Katrina hurricane disaster, the use of work teams in nursing homes, adolescent suicide, health and health care in Sub-Saharan Africa, parenting in Ireland and Sweden, multi-racial marriages and churches, gender in ranching, and political economy.
