Military Benefits

Getting started

The University of North Texas has several resources for military personnel who need information about benefits and programs.

Military evaluation for college credit

UNT is affiliated with Service Members Opportunity Colleges and the Concurrent Admissions Program.

UNT follows the recommendations of the American Council on Education's Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services.

UNT grants lower- and upper-division credit but does not award credit for vocational or graduate-level work. Listed below are the guidelines for each section of the armed services.

Army

Order the AARTS (Army/American Council on Educational Registry Transcript System) from aarts.army.mil or call toll free 866-297-4427.

Air Force

A Community College of the Air Force transcript may be obtained by sending a completed AF Form 2099 or a brief letter requesting transcript service to: CCAF/RRRA, Office of the Registrar, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. 26112-6655.

A certificate of training must accompany the request (DD Form 214 is not acceptable). Specify the type of transcript (personal or official) and the address to which the transcript is to be mailed. Provide full name and Social Security number and sign the form. Official transcripts will be mailed only to institutions. There is no charge for the transcript.

Other Areas

Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Department of Defense military personnel can obtain an official SMART transcript by visiting smart.cnet.navy.mil or calling 877-253-7122.

To ask questions about any of the above information, contact the UNT military evaluator in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 940-565-2681.

Submitting a DD 214

The DD 214 (Member 4 version), which identifies the veteran's condition of discharge, must be submitted to the admissions office for evaluation to waive the wellness requirement in the academic core curriculum.

All service members should have received a copy of the DD 214 when they were discharged. To obtain the DD 214 and other in-service training records, write to: General Services Administration, National Personnel Records Center (Military Personnel Records), 9700 Page Blvd., St. Louis, Mo. 63132.

The veteran may request service records by submitting U.S. Government Standard Form 180, which may be obtained from a state veterans affairs office, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or the National Personnel Records Center.

Financial assistance

Hazelwood Act ( Texas veterans)

Section 54.203 of the Texas Education Code, commonly known as the Hazelwood Act, provides tuition and some fee exemptions for veterans and for dependent children of military personnel who were killed in the line of duty. The act applies to undergraduate and graduate courses. For questions regarding the Hazelwood Act, contact the UNT waiver clerk in Student Accounting at 940-565-3225. General eligibility information and answers to frequently asked questions are available online at www.thecb.state.tx.us.

Military residency waiver

This waiver offers Texas resident tuition rates to military personnel who have been assigned to duty in Texas. The waiver also applies to spouses and children. To qualify, the applicant must:

  • be employed with the Army, Army Reserve, Army National Guard, Air National Guard, Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard or Coast Guard Reserve of the United States;
  • be assigned to duty in Texas, not just training with Texas units;
  • provide the appropriate documentation to the UNT Registrar's Office so that a permit to register as a Texas resident can be obtained.

Chapter 30 - Montgomery GI Bill

Service members who entered active duty on or after July 1, 1985, for two or more years and had their service pay reduced by $100 per month for 12 months and have an honorable discharge may be eligible. Other possible qualifications are available at www.gibill.va.gov. Monthly payment is based on enrollment in courses leading to your degree. You have 10 years from your date of separation from active duty to use 36 months of full-time entitlement.

Service men and women still on active duty may use these benefits upon completion of two years of active service. See the education services officer in your branch of service for more information.

Chapter 31 - Veterans

Veterans who served honorably in the armed services, suffered a service-connected disability and are determined by the DVA to need vocational rehabilitation may be eligible for paid tuition and other expenses for as long as 48 months of full-time educational training. In addition, they receive a monthly educational subsistence allowance. The basic period of eligibility for benefits is 12 years. For billing information, contact the sponsored billing clerk in Student Accounting at 940-565-3225.

Chapter 35 - Survivors and dependents education

Survivors of deceased veterans, spouses of totally disabled veterans and their children who are between 18 and 26 years old may be entitled to an educational allowance when the death or permanent disability resulted from active-duty service. Benefits are payable to the spouse for 10 years after death or disability and to children between the ages of 18 and 26. Monthly payment is based on enrollment in courses leading toward a degree.

Chapter 1606 - Selected Reserve GI Bill

A reservist who incurs a six-year obligation in the Selected Reserve may be eligible for 36 months of full-time educational training. Students must have completed the requirements for a high school diploma or the equivalent by the time they complete initial active duty for training. Monthly payment is based on enrollment in courses leading to a degree.

Chapter 1607 - Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)

Eligibility will be determined by the Department of Defense or Department of Homeland Security as appropriate. Generally, a member of a reserve component who serves on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001 under title 10, U.S.C., for at least 90 consecutive days under a contingency operation is eligible.

National Guard members are eligible if their active service extends for 90 consecutive days or more and their service is:

  • authorized under section 502(f), title 21, U.S.C.,
  • authorized by the President or Secretary of Defense for a national emergency
  • supported by federal funds

A member who is called-up from the Selected Reserve would not remain eligible for REAP if the member goes into the Individual Ready Reserve. The Selected Reserve member must remain in the Selected Reserve to maintain eligibility. Other possible qualifications are available at www.gibill.va.gov.
