UNT Dallas Campus offers 10 TI Foundation math scholarships for Fall 2008

DALLAS – The University of North Texas Dallas Campus is offering 10 full scholarships to academically qualified students in its Texas Instruments Foundation Math Scholars program.

Created by a $1.1 million grant from the TI Foundation, the program is designed to prepare math educators for service in North Texas. Students who are accepted into the TI Math Scholars Program sign a letter of intent to serve for two years in the Dallas, DeSoto, Duncanville, Cedar Hill or Lancaster ISD.

The TI Math Scholars program seeks to enroll a diverse student population, especially members of underrepresented groups in higher education. The scholarship is awarded on a semester-by-semester basis and in successive years as long as the student continues in good standing with the UNT Dallas Campus and TI Math Scholars program.

Mary Hannigan, program coordinator, said that math educators are among the most sought after teachers in North Texas and beyond.

“There really is unlimited potential with a degree such as this,” Hannigan said. “This program also illustrates how important education in math and the sciences is to a corporation like Texas Instruments.”

To qualify for the TI Math Scholars program, students must have completed 60 credit hours, be accepted at UNT, have a cumulative 2.75 GPA, have taken Calculus I and II, and have completed the Texas Higher Education Assessment Exam (with scores of 220 in writing; 230 in math; and 240 in reading).
