Application Procedures:

MPH and DrPH Applicants: are required to complete the SOPHAS online application for schools of public health, which is available on their web site at www.sophas.org . In addition, applicants are required to submit official transcripts of all prior college-level course work, three letters of evaluation by individuals in a position to comment on the applicant's potential as a student and future professional, resume or curriculum vitae, and any other documentation that may be required to expedite your application to SOPHAS. GRE scores must be sent directly to the school (using institutional code 6565) from the Educational Testing Service, ETS www.ets.org . Frequently Asked Questions

Students at the University of North Texas (UNT) requesting enrollment for classes to transfer to UNT for their degree programs should e-mail their request to sph@hsc.unt.edu rather than completing an application.
 

Admissions Requirements for the MHA:
Application Deadlines
The applicant must hold a minimum of a bachelor s degree or its equivalent from a regionally or federally accredited institution.

  • The applicant must provide official transcripts from all universities or colleges attended, documenting their GPA on all undergraduate and post-graduate work.
  • All students seeking admission to a graduate degree program are required to take and submit scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to institutional code 6565. Applicants may substitute the GMAT , MCAT or LSAT  for the GRE.
  • The health science center requires an applicant from a foreign country to demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in oral and written English before being granted admission. Minimum TOEFL requirements: 550-written exam, 213-computer exam, or 79 on internet based examination or evidence of successful completion of a non-credit intensive course in English. Score reports should be sent to institutional code 6565.
  • Applicants to the MHA program may complete an application through SOPHAS or UNT Health Science Center School of Public Health. If applying through SOPHAS submit all application materials directly to SOPHAS. If applying to UNT Health Science Center download application and submit all application materials directly to the university.

Admissions Requirements for the MPH:
Application Deadlines
The applicant must hold a minimum of a bachelor s degree or its equivalent from a regionally or federally accredited institution.

  1. The applicant must designate on the application and reference in their Statement of Goals the area of study they wish to pursue within the M.P.H. program.
  2. The applicant must provide official transcripts from all universities or colleges attended, documenting their GPA on all undergraduate and post-graduate work.
  3. All students seeking admission to a graduate degree program are required to take and submit scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to institutional code 6565. Applicants to the Department of Health Management and Policy may substitute the GMAT or LSAT  for the GRE.
  4. The health science center requires an applicant from a foreign country to demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in oral and written English before being granted admission.     • Three letters of evaluation by individuals in a position to comment on the applicant's potential as a student and future professional
    • An essay of personal career goals (referencing the desired concentration)
    • A current curriculum vita or resume

 

Admissions Requirements for the Dr.P.H.
Application Deadlines
The applicant must hold a minimum of a master's degree from a regionally or federally accredited institution. Preference is given to applicants with the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree. Students who do not hold the M.P.H. degree will be required to take additional courses dependant upon their prior course work.

Students will only be admitted to the Dr.P.H. program in the fall semester. Students may take prerequisite coursework in the spring and summer semesters prior to being granted full admissions to the Dr.P.H. program in the fall semester.

The prerequisites for the Dr.P.H. program include 18 SCH of M.P.H. coursework*:

    • Biostatistics for Public Health I
    • Biostatistics for Public Health II
    • Behavioral and Social Aspects of Public Health
    • Introduction to Health Management and Policy
    • Environmental Health
    • Principles of Epidemiology

*Each department may require additional prerequisites that are specific to their area of specialization.

  1. Students who apply to the Dr.P.H. program without an M.P.H. will be evaluated for their potential in the Dr.P.H. program. If they are admitted to the Dr.P.H. program, it will be under a Provisional status. Upon the successful completion of all Dr.P.H. prerequisites with a grade point average of at least a 3.7, students will gain Full admissions to the Dr.P.H. program without having to go through the admissions process again. If the student's GPA is below a 3.7 on the Dr.P.H. prerequisites, they must go back through the admissions process for review; they will not be guaranteed full admission to the Dr.P.H. program.
  2. The applicant must designate on the application and reference in their Statement of Goals the area of study they wish to pursue within the Dr.P.H. program.
  3. The applicant must provide transcripts documenting their GPA on all prior undergraduate and graduate work.
  4. All students seeking admission to a graduate degree program are required to take and submit scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE -use institutional code 6565). Applicants to the Department of Health Management and Policy may substitute the GMAT for the GRE. Only official score reports from the Educational Testing Service are acceptable.

D.O./M.P.H. Admissions Requirements:

  1. Applicants for the D.O./M.P.H. dual degree program may substitute the MCAT for the GRE
  2. Applicants may apply to any M.P.H. concentration
  3. Applicants that are currently enrolled in TCOM should submit a letter to the University of North Texas Health Science Center Registrar granting permission to release copies of official transcripts and MCAT score reports to the School of Public Health, Office of Student and Academic Services.
  4. Applicants must file the following official credentials with the School of Public Health, Office of Student and Academic Services:
    • An application for admission to the School of Public Health
    • Application fee
    • Complete official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
    • Official scores from one of the following entrance exams: GRE, GMAT, MCAT
    • Three confidential letters of evaluation by individuals in a position to comment on the applicant s potential as a student and future professional
    • An essay statement of personal career goals (referencing the desired concentration)
    • A current curriculum vita or resume

Applicants that have not enrolled in TCOM must request MCAT scores and official transcripts from any college or university attended to be sent to the School of Public Health, Office of Student and Academic Services.
 

M.S.N./M.P.H.-Health Management & Policy Admissions Requirements:

  1. Applicant may only apply to the Department of Health Management & Policy
  2. Students in the M.S.N. program must apply to the M.P.H. program prior to the
    completion of 24 SCH in the M.S.N. program. Conversely, students in the M.P.H.
    program must apply to the M.S.N. program prior to the completion of 24 SCH in the
    M.P.H. program.
  3. The health science center requires an applicant from a foreign country to demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in oral and written English before being granted admission. Requirements: minimum TOEFL scores of 550 on written exam, 213 on computer exam, 79 on internet based examination(use institutional code 6565) or evidence of successful completion of a non-credit intensive course in English.
  4. To be considered for admission, the applicant must file the following official credentials with the Schools of Public Health Online Application Service, SOPHAS or UNTHSC School of Public Health, Office of Academic and Student Services:

M.S. Applied Anthropology/M.P.H. Community Health- Admissions Requirements:

  1. Applicants may only apply to the Community Health Concentration within the Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences
  2. New students are encouraged to apply simultaneously to both programs for the Fall Semester. Application deadlines for Anthropology are Feb. 15 th and May 1 st . However, a student may decide to apply at any time prior to the 18 SCH cut-off (see below). Students are not given dual degree status until they have been successfully admitted to both the M.P.H. and the M.S. in Applied Anthropology programs.
  3. The health science center requires an applicant from a foreign country to demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in oral and written English before being granted admission. Requirements: minimum TOEFL scores of 550 on written exam, 213 on computer exam, 79 on internet based examination(use institutional code 6565) or evidence of successful completion of a non-credit intensive course in English.

For students currently enrolled in the M.P.H. or M.S. Anthropology program, they have 18 SCH to decide if they would like to complete the dual degree program. If a current M.P.H. student, they must apply to the anthropology program for the Fall semester. If a current anthropology student, they can apply to the SPH for any semester (Fall, Spring, or Summer).


Non Degree Admissions Requirements
Application Deadlines
The health science center recognizes that some students may wish to be admitted to the School of Public Heatlh for the purpose of taking courses not necessarily leading to an advanced degree. Admission to the School of Public Health may be granted, subject to the following provisions.

  1. The applicant must hold a minimum of a bachelor s degree or its equivalent from a regionally or federally accredited institution, have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 or better and must meet application deadlines.
  2. The student in this status is required to receive credit in all graduate courses taken, and must maintain a GPA of 3.0 on all such courses attempted.
  3. A student who is admitted to non-degree status has no assurance that work completed under this status will be applicable toward degree requirements should he or she subsequently be admitted to a degree program at the health science center. A maximum of 12 semester hours may be taken. Completion of departmental graduate courses by non-degree students does not obligate the School of Public Health to grant admission to a degree program at a later date, unless all general and specific requirements for admission to that program have been met.
  4. International applicants are not eligible for non-degree admission.
  5. To be considered for admission, the applicant must file the following official credentials with the School of Public Health Office of Student & Academic Services:

Summer Institute Admissions Requirements 
Application Deadlines

The Summer Institute is an intensive 3-week session that offers coursework in each of the five major disciplines of public health. Courses are taught by UNT Health Science Center School of Public Health faculty and may be transferred to a degree program with in the School of Public Health or other graduate programs. Students earn three (3) semester credit hours for each course in which they enroll. Admission to the School of Public Health may be granted, subject to the following provisions.

  1. The applicant must hold a minimum of a bachelor s degree or its equivalent from a regionally or federally accredited institution and meet the application deadline of May 30th.
  2. A student who is admitted to the Summer Institute program will be allowed to take a maximum of 12 semester hours. Completion of departmental graduate courses by Summer Institute students does not obligate the School of Public Health to grant admission to a degree program at a later date, unless all general and specific requirements for admission to that program have been met.
  3. International applicants are not eligible for Summer Institute admission.
  4. To be considered for admission, the applicant must file the following official credentials with the School of Public Health Office of Student & Academic Services:
    • Complete application
    • Submit a copy of official transcript showing bachelor/master's degree conferred.
