Through the Institute of Applied Economics, the College of Public Affairs and Community Service focuses on economic analysis and information sharing that can help Metroplex communities, the North Texas region, the state, and the nation develop sound economic policies.

The Institute of Applied Economics gives students the opportunity to pursue a wide range of interests including economic development and regional and sectorial analysis. The MS program also encompasses a diverse array of course work in the complementary areas of accounting, finance, geography, marketing, political science, public administration, real estate, and sociology.

The Institute of Applied Economics also offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate minor in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Please see link to the left for more information about this program and the classes.

Faculty in the Institute pursue a broad range of research areas including public policy, economic development, labor relations, alternative dispute resolution, political economy, industrial site location theory, transportation policy, telecommunications and information policy, and other applied research problems. Students participate in faculty research efforts to enhance their ability to apply social and economic theories to real-world situations. The Institute of Applied Economics is a place where students learn to put theory to work.

The experience students gain in this program prepares them to pursue careers in a wide range of fields including financial analysis, commercial real estate, policy analysis, economic development, and market analysis. Graduates have found opportunities in large corporations, government agencies, and small business and community organizations. The program's emphasis on developing a broad range of analytical skills gives our graduates flexibility in their career path that enhance life-long job opportunities.

The Institute of Applied Economics is closely affiliated with the University Center for Economic Development and Research. Through its contacts, the Center provides economic and public policy consulting services to its clients in the public and private sectors, including state government agencies and Fortune 500 companies.

Since its inception in 1989, the Center has prepared more than 60 reports covering a broad range of topics. The Center has assisted the cities of Richland Hills, Burleson, and Dallas with industrial targeting and long-term strategic economic planning. It recently completed studies on labor force needs of high-tech firms in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and the contribution of higher education to the economy of the North Texas region.

Economic impact studies have also been prepared for the Texas Motor Speedway, the film and video industry, and the communications information industry. Recent policy research performed by the Center has focused on development of advanced telecommunications infrastructures and the merger of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads. The Center assisted the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce with preparation of a long-range strategic plan and prepared a report for the City of Arlington on the economic contribution of the General Motors Plant as a part of the city's successful effort to convince GM to keep the plant open.

Through this broad experience, the Center has amassed a sizeable economic, social, and demographic database for the state of Texas and prepares a semi-annual economic forecast for the state and its five largest metropolitan areas. Faculty members affiliated with the Center also serve on a variety of state and local boards and commissions.

The research and economic interpretations of faculty in the Institute have gained national attention with articles featuring their work regularly appearing in such publications as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and industry trade publications.

The Institute of Applied Economics plays a major role in interpreting economic trends for the media. National television networks and leading newspapers across Texas and the nation rely on Institute economists for information and insights.
