Prominent Historians To Discuss Writing About American Presidents
Historians Douglas Brinkley, Joyce Appleby, John Patrick Diggins and Kevin P. Phillips will discuss "Writing the Lives of American Presidents" at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Library of Congress in the Montpelier Room, sixth floor, James Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E. in Washington, D.C.
Sponsored by the Library’s Center for the Book and the Manuscript Division, the program is free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required. The event is presented in cooperation with Times Books, an imprint of Henry Holt and Company, and in conjunction with the publication of its American Presidents series. The authors will sign books following the presentation.
Each of the four historians has published or is preparing a volume in the American Presidents series. Appleby’s "Thomas Jefferson," Phillips’ "William McKinley" and Diggins’ "John Adams" were published in 2003. Panel moderator Brinkley’s book on Gerald Ford is tentatively scheduled for release in the fall of 2004. Each book in the series is an incisive, panoramic biography that focuses on the subject’s presidency and offers a distillation of his character and career.
The Center for the Book was established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books, reading, literacy and libraries by using the resources and prestige of the Library of Congress.
