Objective:

Leaks in underground storage systems for fuel and other hazardous liquids including tanks and associated piping, are known to be sources of environmental risk. In fact, a set of interrelated regulations requiring periodic inspection and upgrading of storage systems has been put into place. A SERDP project lead to the development of an acoustic emission technique to detect and locate small leaks in underground pipelines. To facilitate experimentation under well-controlled simulated field conditions, 500 to 1000 ft experimental pipelines have been installed at a test location at the EPA Edison, New Jersey site. There is an experimental need to extend the capabilities of the pipeline to investigate acoustic sensors that are placed in the flow of liquid in the line and to facilitate development of alternative sensor types that may enhance the detection/location ability already demonstrated with the acoustic approach. The goals of this project were to extend the experimental capabilities of the line, to conduct an investigation of an "intrusive" acoustic sensor, and to initiate a study of smart-pipe leak detection approaches.

Approach:

The following tasks have been identified for this project:

1. Extend research capabilities of the line by installing valves, backflow presenters, and flow monitors to better simulate working pipelines.
2. Conduct evaluation of the intrusive sensor.
3. Conduct acoustic leak detection measurements under flow conditions.
4. Evaluate the application of smart pipe technology to the experimental pipelines.

The enhancement of the experimental pipeline has been completed. The appropriate valves and flow monitoring equipment have been installed. The intrusive sensor has been evaluated. Under the test conditions, there was approximately a ten-fold increase in the sensitivity of the acoustic results, but that was not enough to achieve the desired level of sensitivity for the program as a whole. Some concepts to be explored in a new model of an intrusive sensor were developed. Design of modifications, including a holding tank, required to allow simulation of flow conditions at the pipeline has been initiated. State of the art studies on smart pipes have been initiated in order to evaluate their potential applicability at the test facility.

Expected Results:

The focus of previous research using the test lines was on storage and pipeline transport of hazardous materials, including petroleum based fuel and low-level radioactive wastewater streams. However, regulatory and liability considerations; lead to the design of the apparatus based upon the use of water as a surrogate for hazardous liquids. For acoustic purposes, it has been demonstrated that the sound transmission rates through water and through petrochemical fluids are sufficiently close to for successful acoustic leak detection and location. A goal of future work is to extend the sensor spacing while still permitting the location of very small leaks. It is believed that sound loss will be less if the sensor is placed in the liquid flow rather than on the exterior of the pipeline. Further, there is a goal to be able to detect leaks under flowing liquid conditions as well as under static conditions.
