Sanitary Sewer Overflow Toolbox

OVERVIEW

EPA is working with states, local governments, technical trade associations, the Small Government Outreach Group, and others to develop a range of "tools" for use in implementing the proposed SSO Rule. This toolbox will help municipalities and states to implement requirements in an effective and cost-efficient manner.

EPA is continuing to improve and add materials to the SSO toolbox, and welcomes your suggestions. Please email any comments or suggestions to Sharie Centilla.

WHAT CAN I FIND UNDER THIS TOPIC?

Sanitary Sewer Overflow Analysis and Planning (SSOAP) Toolbox - Developed by EPA’s Office of Research & Development (ORD), this tool is meant to provide Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) and NPDES authorities with the ability to predict Rainfall-Derived Inflow and Infiltration (RDII) into sanitary sewer systems.

Featured Case Studies, Fact Sheets, and Other Information - EPA is working closely with several communities to develop a series of case studies that document innovative techniques for addressing overflows of sanitary sewers. A series of fact sheets are being developed for each of these projects and related topics.

Fact Sheets and Outreach Materials - EPA has developed a series of fact sheets that provide additional information on the need to control SSOs and the components of the proposed SSO rule. EPA also cooperates with professional organizations to prepare brochures and pamphlets that can be used to help educate the public on the need to control SSOs and what homeowners can do to help.

Policy and Guidance - EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance is developing CMOM guidance documents for permit writers and NPDES inspectors.

Technical and Issue Papers - EPA has developed technical documents on optimizing collection systems, identifying SSOs, and the link between SSOs and system maintenance.

Additional Resources - Find links to other EPA program offices, regional and state links, related organizations, and useful online tools and resources.
