EPA Employees Receive Awards
[EPA press release - December 16, 1980]Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Douglas M. Costle told a group of EPA employees today their work was typical of the achievements by the dedicated men and women who have carried out EPA programs for the last 10 years.
The occasion was EPA's annual award ceremony for outstanding EPA workers throughout the country. It came just two weeks after EPA passed its 10th anniversary.
Costle said, "Our 1980 award recipients have made valuable contributions to the health and welfare of the nation's citizens. They join a distinguished group of past awardees who molded the agency in its crucial first decade into a strong, responsible effective organization."
As examples of environmental achievements by EPA employees over the past decade, Costle noted the following:
Ninety-two percent of major sources of industrial air and water pollution are meeting or are on a legally binding schedule to meet the initial requirements of environmental laws.
The Great Lakes are substantially cleaner: Lake Erie, for example, once thought "dying," has been rejuvenated.
Ohio's Cuyahoga River, so severely polluted it caught fire in the late 1960s, has had its grossest pollution remedied; parks are being planned for its banks.
the Connecticut River contains Atlantic salmon for the first time in decades.
More than a dozen dangerous pesticides, including DDT, chlordane and Mirex, have been partially or completely banned.
New EPA standards to control cancer causing chemicals in drinking water go into effect across the country next fall.
"We give special thanks to the 1980 awardees," Costle said. "Their outstanding accomplishments remind us of our past and renew our resolve to continue to give the nation our very best over the next decade."
