Major Findings from the NAEP 1997 Arts Report CardThe NAEP 1997 Arts Report Card presents a great deal of useful information about what students know and can do in music, theatre, visual arts, what sorts of arts teaching is happening in our nation's schools, and the availability of school resources for the arts. NAEP gathers data about student achievement from assessment exercises and information about the education of students and school resources from the background questionnaires. For example, take a look at a data table featuring information about how often eighth-graders receive instruction in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts gathered from school questionnaires. Notice that while most students have some exposure to music and visual arts, few students receive in-school instruction in dance or theatre.
Check out relationships between what kinds of music in-school activities students were doing and their performance on the music assessment by viewing the music student profile. A quick way to learn more about the kinds of information that can be found in the Arts Report Card is to glance at the Highlights of the NAEP 1997 Arts Assessment Report Card. The Highlights report introduces readers to the NAEP arts assessment and its results. View all the data from the 1997 NAEP arts assessment in the Summary Data Tables. |
