USGS contributes to Estuarine Research Federation Meeting

The USGS contributed multiple presentations and several posters at the ERF 2005 meeting. Many of the presentations were given during the 18 sessions that were part of the special Chesapeake Bay Colloquium, which was part of the ERF meeting and convened by the Chesapeake Bay Research Consortium. To find out more about the meeting and abstracts visit the ERF home page and abstract page. Below are two of the USGS posters represented at the meeting.

Poster CPS-17.C03 by Jurate M.Landwehr is entitled "Determining the 'Best' Model for Explaining Water Clarity Variation during SAV Seasons within the Tidal Tributary Rivers of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed". The work shows that the amount of variation in water clarity (measured as Secchi depth) at stations throughout the tidal tributary rivers of the Chesapeake Bay system that can be explained by a regression model structure and a diverse suite of explantory and time trend variables, differs between locations in the same river and between seasons at the same location, but none-the-less, the primary explanatory variable for water clarity in this system is the variation in total suspended sediment. Poster COL-09.A12 by Jurate M.Landwehr is entitled "Spatial and Temporal Variability in the Kd-Secchi Conversion Coefficient Observed among the Tidal Tributary Rivers of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed". This work demonstrates that the use of a single conversion coeffiecient to transform commonly available Secchi depth measurements into light attenuation coefficients in order to assess the per cent light through the water column available at depth may lead to an erroneous assessment of compliance or noncompliance with the newly published (EPA 2003) ambient water quality criteria for water clarity for the tidal rivers of the Chesapeake Bay system.
